CARELIFE Identifying

CARELIFE Identifying LIFE & Your Personal Relationship Skills, Part 3 of 5

In this section of the CARE program you will be studying about LIFE Identifying. Each letter in the word LIFE has a special meaning which can help you begin understanding and helping people in their daily interactions, and in solving personal problems.

Identifying Needs

While listening to people, as you learned earlier, is an important first step in helping them; it must not stop there. You need to strive also to identify, both with them, and with their needs.

To IDENTIFY: in this case means to understand, and share someone’s feelings.

What do you think identifying with someone’s feelings means (in practical ways)?

Jesus is an example to us relating to this: Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.  Hebrews 4: 14, 15

Do you think it is important to put forth efforts to identify with the people you desire to help?

If you want to help others you will need to be sensitive toward their thoughts and feelings and try to relate to what they are saying (without necessarily agreeing or disagreeing with what is being spoken).

The first step is to listen to what is being said, and then to try to communicate by word and action: “I understand.”

Think of some real-life examples in which identifying with someone could be very helpful. Discuss these thoughts with someone you know.

The materials you have been studying up to this point can assist in the process that leads to good, or improved, communications; but there is still more to be understood.

In part 4 of this 5 part series we will be discussing how gathering facts, and information, can help in discovering solutions to problems. Use the following link to CARELIFE Fact-Finding to learn more about this.
